George Petrides (b. 1964, Athens) is a contemporary sculptor known for his international public works and traveling exhibitions. Based in Athens and New York, his practice explores the intersection of personal narrative and cultural heritage through self-developed fabrication processes using sustainable materials.
Mastery of Public Space
As of February 2026, Petrides has over 30 permanent installations across seven countries. His sculptures are held in prominent locations by corporate, educational, governmental, healthcare, and religious institutions. His portfolio includes both monumental outdoor works and indoor-scale pieces designed for public spaces.
Major Exhibitions
In parallel with his public sculpture, his traveling exhibition, Hellenic Heads: A Personal Exploration of Greek History and Culture (2022–2026), is one of the most extensive traveling exhibitions of its kind. As of February 2026, the exhibition has visited eight venues across the U.S., Asia, and Europe, reaching over 100,000 visitors. Currently in Paris, the exhibition will move to Berlin, with two additional cities to follow, for a total of 12 venues over six years.
His newest exhibition presents his family history—spanning four generations over 100 years—using video interviews, archival footage, and five sculptures. Links to the French and Arabic versions are provided below.
Synthesizing Tradition and Technology
Petrides blends ancient traditions inspired by his dual heritage with 21st-century innovation. His methodology—a "dialogue between the hand and the machine"—begins with traditional clay modeling. He then transitions into a digital phase of 3D scanning and digital sculpting before finalizing the work through bespoke printing processes using eco-responsible and upcycled materials. Whether cast in classical bronze or contemporary alloys, each work is engineered for permanence.
Intellectual Foundations and Background
The rigor of Petrides’ work is informed by his studies at Harvard College (B.A. in Classics) and Stanford University (Double Master’s). This background in the humanities provides the theoretical bedrock for his creative research, while his graduate training supports the complex management required for global public art projects.
Before dedicating himself exclusively to sculpture in 2017, Petrides had a distinguished career in international finance as a Managing Director at Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette. After two decades of parallel artistic development, Petrides has returned fully to his primary vocation, emerging as a vital voice in contemporary art.
